Frog and Toad is Wholesome, Family Fun

The timeless magic of Arnold Lobel’s beloved children’s book series comes to life in the Marriott Theatre’s delightful production of A Year with Frog and Toad. With book and lyrics by Willie Reale and a score by Robert Reale, this whimsical musical adaptation perfectly captures the endearing spirit that resonates with children young and young-at-heart.

Directed by Elizabeth Romero, the production finds its heart in the friendship between the jovial Frog and the temperamental Toad. Told through a series of lighthearted vignettes, the duo navigates an embarrassing swimsuit mishap, a baking conundrum, a spooky story, and a bumpy sled ride. Despite these ups and downs, the amphibians hold fast to one another, offering a poignant lesson that kindness is the foundation of a lasting relationship.

Callan Roberts is a standout as Frog, serving as the production's steady, joyful anchor. Roberts possesses a fantastic physicality that imbues the character with a fun-loving nature that elevates the role beyond the page. His clever use of inflection and vocal intonation brings the humor to life; with his expressive range and infectious energy, one could easily imagine him as an excellent Willy Wonka.

Opposite him, Karl Hamilton offers a fascinating interpretation of Toad. Rather than leaning into a one-note “grumpy” persona, Hamilton makes the creative choice to play Toad with a sensitive, child-like disposition. He portrays the character as someone easily overwhelmed by confusion or sudden emotional disruption, which adds depth to their dynamic.

The ensemble cast deserves immense credit for their versatility, seamlessly juggling multiple roles. Their high-energy performances effectively propel the story through the changing seasons, keeping the audience engaged from start to finish.

The vibrant stage design is equally playful, featuring giant flowers, leaves, and bubbles.

The cast portrays various forest animals with costumes that lean into abstraction, transforming bird wings into shawls and turtle shells into backpacks. While these conceptual choices are creative, they occasionally feel slightly underdone. Characters like the mouse and the birds would have benefited from a few additional flourishes to fully accentuate the ensemble’s flair.

For parents bringing their children, this production does an excellent job of being accessible for children. The story provides a gentle exploration of emotions—such as anger, sadness, and loneliness - offering a format for children to see how characters process and overcome negative experiences. The narrative encourages community and kindness, demonstrating the power of working together.

In many ways, Frog assumes a protective, almost parental role toward Toad, calming him during tense circumstances and actively seeking opportunities to encourage him—a touching lesson that young audience members are sure to notice.

The production also features a post-show question-and-answer session. This is a wonderful addition, allowing children to engage directly with the cast and learn about the behind-the-scenes nature of theater, from the mechanics of props to the process of putting a musical together.

Ultimately, A Year with Frog and Toad is a heartwarming reminder of the value of friendship, making it a perfect outing for families. Kids of all ages are sure to enjoy the wholesome entertainment and take away valuable lessons.

The adage goes that you can’t choose your family but you can choose your friends. Throughout our lives, we meet people we connect with who see the beauty and potential within us even when we can’t see it ourselves. People who simply get us. Friendship is one of the most magical experiences we can have in life. It’s no wonder this theme is so consistently visited in media, literature, and theatre and stands the test of time. There’s no better representation of the true meaning of friendship than that of Charlotte’s Web, now playing at Greenhouse Theatre Center.

Charlotte’s Web is a story about an unlikely friendship between Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider. On a small farm, a young girl is determined to save the life of a diminutive newborn pig. But the young animal’s fate remains uncertain until a courageous and determined spider spins remarkable webs to prove that “Wilbur isn’t just any ordinary pig!”

The Young People’s Theatre of Chicago brings this beloved children’s classic to the Greenhouse Theatre Center for a limited run this May. Based on E.B. White’s Newberry Honor Award-winning story, Charlotte’s Web explores bravery, selfless love, and the true meaning of friendship. Artistic director Randy White says it best, “E.B. White’s beloved story demonstrates above all that friendship is immeasurably valuable.” With Renzo Vicente as Wilbur and Mary Margaret McCormack as Charlotte leading the cast, the Young People’s Theatre ensemble embodies the story’s themes of compassion, kindness, and perseverance, bringing humor and heart to a simple and timeless story.

Friendship is not only a theme of the play but also radiates throughout the cast and crew. Behind the scenes, the staff’s long-standing friendship and partnerships weave design magic that can be felt in every scene and one that Randy White acknowledges, “Staging a beloved family favorite with so many friends is a perfect way to bring to a close the YPT’s most successful and exhilarating season yet!” With a humble yet radiant set and spirited cast put on a simple, charming, and endearing production that young audiences can follow and mature audiences can appreciate. The Young People’s Theatre reminds us that sometimes all we need is a friend to believe in us, to fight for us, to remind us that we are remarkable just the way we are. Charlotte’s Web And sometimes, if we're very lucky, we get to sit right next to that person to take in a wonderful show.

We all can do with a little more magic in our lives. Myths and Gods, magic and fantasy, these are the foundations of the stories we’re drawn to. They have a way of pulling us in, making us believe, and letting us escape the world around us, even if it is for only a few short hours. Magic can be found all over Chicago, take it from any die-hard Cubs fan; though it may not happen often, when we see magic, it stays with us. A little bit of that same magic is alive and well on the North Shore as the Skokie Theatre takes on The Lightning Thief: a Percy Jackson Musical.

The Lightning Thief: a Percy Jackson Musical is based on the popular novel of the same name by Rick Riodan. The musical follows Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old boy who newly discovers that he is a demigod and goes on a quest to find Zeus' missing lightning bolt and prevent a war between the Greek gods. With the musical’s book written by Joe Tracz and music by Rob Rokicki, this production has something for people of all ages. The musical first premiered on Broadway in 2014 with a rewrite and expansion run in 2017 though it hasn’t been widely performed in Chicagoland and it’s a shame. The musical is funny, witty, and simply magical.

Skokie Theatre only added to the charm of The Lightning Thief, the intimate vintage theatre lending itself to the production. Do not be deceived. This was no local community or high school production. The talent that brought this mythical story to life could grace any musical stage in Chicago and hold their own. Chicagoans will no doubt know the name P-Jay Adams who portrayed Percy Jackson, their pitch and vocal prowess a slice of magic in plot-moving musical numbers like “The Day I Got Expelled,” “The Campfire Song,” and “Killer Quest!” Adams led the plucky, youthful, and inclusive ensemble cast from the East coast to Los Angeles where the underworld resides. Delivering witty one-liners, embodying the characters of Gods and their angsty half-blood children, The Lightning Thief ensemble cast brought the mystical story to life and made us believe in the magic of the theatre.

huzzah

While a Chicago theatre goer might not put Skokie or the North Shore on the map by comparison to so many powerhouses within the city, there is some kind of nostalgic magic at Skokie Theatre. Given the opportunity, Adams and many members of the ensemble cast could easily step onto any Broadway in Chicago stage. If given the production budget of a show like Death Becomes Her, The Lightning Thief: A Percy Jackson Musical would have the potential to make a spectacular run in Chicago.

The Lightning Thief: a Percy Jackson Musical is now playing on select dates at the Skokie Theatre located at 7924 Lincoln Ave in Skokie, IL through July 28th. Tickets are now available for purchase here. Lightning might not strike twice so don’t miss your chance to add a little magic to your evening and mock The Gods with your favorite demi-godlike hero.

The anti-fairytale is something everyone can get behind. Though there have many of these attempts over the years, Shrek is still the stand out, the one that broke the mold, the OG. Now everyone's favorite ogre is back in an  hilarious stage spectacle, based on the Oscar-winning, smash-hit film.

An unlikely hero, Shrek, is determined to reclaim his precious swamp from exiled fairytale misfits with the help of his wisecracking sidekick, Donkey. Together, they find themselves on a life-changing journey to rescue a princess who is locked away in an isolated castle guarded by a fire-breathing, lovesick dragon. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a royal wedding, and an evil curse and you've got the kind of mess only true love's kiss can fix!

The musical closely followed the movie, at times nearly line for line, even capturing the original line’s cadence and inflection. But the repetitive was broken up by clever musical numbers such as What’s Up Duloc?’,  ‘I Think I Got You Beat,’ and ‘Freak Flag,’ that enabled the show to stand out on its own. The musical adapted the magic of the play well with a life-sized version of the gingerbread man, a fire breathing dragon, and the stand out of the day, riding a motor-powered horse, Lord Farquaad played perfectly by Steven Strafford. As the actors, stagehands, and technical crews moved throughout the theater and on stage, the audience was transported to Duloq seamlessly.

The green anti-hero first premiered in 2001 and seventeen years later it still holds up in a form that young audiences can embrace and enjoy.

SHREK THE MUSICAL runs on most Wednesdays through Sundays at 10 a.m. with certain performances at 12:30 p.m. Visit MarriottTheatre.com or call 847.634.0200 for exact schedule, as show times and dates may vary.
