The world premiere of The Hanukkah Humbug brings ghosts, history, tradition, and a whole lot of family fun to the Greenhouse Theater Center just in time for the holidays, Melanie Ann Apel promises a lively, family-friendly experience with this new play co-written by Melanie Ann Apel and Hayden Seth Apel.

A Joe & Melanie Thing Theatre Company is proud to announce its production of The Hanukkah Humbug, on stage at the Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 North Lincoln Avenue, Chicago, 60614, December 3rd to December 6th. Tickets are on sale at www.greenhousetheater.org.

This production of The Hanukkah Humbug is directed by Melanie Ann Apel and features a cast of Chicago area actors. Set in modern-day Chicago, the kids in Ms. Ben’s class are tired of the same old Christmas stories; they want to hear a story about Hanukkah! Alas, Ms. Ben doesn’t have a Hanukkah story to read to her class. "That's ok," says Rusty, "we can make up our own story, but Jewish!" And so begins a classic tale with a Hanukkah twist.

“We have created a delightful retelling of a classic, featuring the ghosts of Hanukkah past, present, and future; a brief history of the Jewish people; the traditions of Hanukkah; and a healthy dose of Yiddish,” says Director Apel. “We want to share the joyful traditions of Hanukkah with everyone, not just with Jewish families.”

We are Chicago-based artists who seek to bring original works to the stage. We are overly dramatic types who cannot resist the call of Muses. Since 2024 we have produced works of satire (Accidental Election of an Anarchist, 2024, and Vulcan Sleeping, 2025), familyfriendly fare (Hanukkah, Shmanukkah! 2025) and drama (Marbled, 2026).
